Laser Therapy

Doctor using laser treatment with female patientPerhaps you’ve been putting up with chronic pain for years or maybe you recently sprained an ankle and want to get back to your favorite sport. At Dr. Mark Chiungos D.C., we’re pleased to offer our patients High-Intensity Laser Therapy, which is a type of infrared laser.

What Are the Primary Benefits?

This modality uses non-ionizing radiation that can be utilized to address injured areas of the body. Some of the major benefits of laser therapy are relieving pain, reducing inflammation, increasing range of motion, and promoting restoration and healing.

Another significant benefit of laser therapy is that no drugs or surgery are required.

The Aspen Laser

The reason we chose to offer the Aspen Laser is that it’s a 45-watt laser that features three individual channels (15 watts of power per channel) with three different light lengths. This laser has the correct horsepower to effectively address an array of conditions. The light length determines the effect and penetration on a person’s tissue. Here’s a look at each channel:

The 808 is a deep penetrating wavelength that when it reaches target cells (those injured cells that are displaying photoreceptors) the light can reach these and stimulate through metabolic pathways the creation of energy. The byproduct is nitrous oxide this means that the cells can now produce energy, which allows them to become normal and healthy.

This wavelength creates that comfortable, warm sensation that people say they experience while receiving laser treatment. One of the benefits of this wavelength is it will relax spasms either due to discs or muscular injuries. It also will improve vascular supply to the areas that are injured. So, once again there’s an increase in blood supply and more opportunity for healing.

This last bandwidth features 10.2 to 11 centimeters of penetration into the body with similar effects to the 808. The 1024 bandwidth stimulates metabolic pathways to produce energy and improve vascularization in a damaged area.

Here are some of the many conditions for which laser therapy is highly effective:

  • Ankle sprains
  • AC joint sprains in the shoulder
  • Knee pain
  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Shingles (yes, you read that correctly!)
  • Wound healing (e.g., wounds from diabetic neuropathies)
  • Wrist sprains

When you come in for your initial appointment, Dr. Mark will get your history and find out what the problem is. After a consultation, he will perform an exam/evaluation to determine whether laser alone is the preferred modality or if your condition would benefit by receiving a combination of therapies.

Once that’s determined Dr. Mark will create a clear-cut treatment plan that will be scheduled and carried out at your convenience. We pride ourselves on no wait times so you will be seen promptly for each session.

Is laser therapy painful?

No, quite the opposite. You may feel a warm and soothing sensation that’s pleasant.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends; many people will experience improvement within the first treatment. If you have an acute condition, however, you will likely require 5-6 treatments. Those with chronic conditions may need 6-12 treatments. Dr. Mark will provide you with all the details of your treatment plan including the number of sessions and cost of treatment.

How long is each session?

On average each session takes just 5-10 minutes but is based on the size of the area being treated, depth of penetration needed and condition being treated.
