Hako-Med Therapy

Knee painHako-Med Horizontal Therapy (ProElec DT 2000) is regarded as a breakthrough in electromedicine; the modality is a combination of all types of electromedical treatment. Hako-Med, which is a German company, engineered and created this state-of-the-art device to build a unique electrotherapy treatment model-Horizontal Therapy. Clinically proven and safe, this patented therapy allows the simultaneous formation of biochemical and bioelectric effects in the same tissue.

“The modality was developed to maximize specific therapeutic mechanisms of action. There are certain bioelectric and biochemical effects that we now know about that occur in the area of treatment that are beneficial to patients with many conditions, whether it be pain, loss of sensation or swelling,” said Dr. Chiungos.

What Are Some Benefits?

With this form of electromedicine, we can release endorphins, counter any irritation and relieve pain. If you’ve experienced damage caused by diabetic neuropathy or direct pressure on nerves, like herniated disks, we can address that with Hako-Med Therapy.

When we apply this electrical therapy it can affect both the nervous system and ultimately promote tissue healing and circulation in the area. In many cases, we can re-establish the nervous system connection with these areas where there’s been a loss of sensation; patients then can regain their sensation.

Hako-Med Therapy is clinically effective in addressing the following conditions:

  • Back pain
  • Foot pain
  • Hand and wrist pain
  • Knee pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Sciatic pain
  • Shoulder pain

The therapy also can help to relax muscle spasms, strengthen muscles and improve range of motion.

With Hako-Med Therapy a small machine that has two channels with four leads is used. Gentle sticky pads will be applied to the skin. We try to either surround the area or follow a known path of a nerve when we set this up on a patient.

When you come in, Dr. Chiungos already knows what areas he will treat. Next, he’ll apply the pads and the leads to your skin. You will sit comfortably in a large La-Z-Boy chair and our chiropractor will do the rest. He will set the programming and time. You can relax during your session, which will take 15-45 minutes, depending on the condition that we’re addressing.

Is receiving the treatment painful?

Dr. Chiungos aims to make the therapy as comfortable as possible. As he begins to increase the amount of physical energy going through your body, you will start to have a slight tingling sensation. Once he knows that you can sense it, he turns it up so it’s comfortable and not too strong.

“As we go up a little higher it sounds more like a bumblebee buzzing. If we hit the right spot, that ‘little baby bear spot,’ it’s just a comfortable, tingling sensation that courses through the area,” he said.

Is there anyone who can't get this therapy?

Although the majority of people can receive the therapy, there are some restrictions. We wouldn’t use it on those who have cancer, fractures, heart conditions or any electrical devices that are put in their body.
